John Albers posted a condolence

In early 1975, a still somewhat wet-behind-the-ears young guy joined the Rauenhorst Corporation as an architect designing for the then vocabulary of the day, industrial buildings. After a few months on the job, a baritone voice from behind my 22nd floor cubicle asked, "Are you Johnnie"? Turning around I recognized the bearded, somewhat grizzled, plaid shirted guy, his arms splayed across the top of my cubicle wall, with a slightly bemused and mischievous look on his face.
He introduced himself as Dick Billmeier and his intent that day was essentially take me by the scruff of my neck to tour his favorite brickyards and introduce me to "shack brick", his favorite easy to lay soft residential bricks, in order to influence my brick selections on future projects. A burger at one of his favorite nearby lunchtime haunts completed the sale.
After that first meeting, as time inevitably rolled on, Dick always greeted me as Johnnie, the only person at Rauenhorst/Opus to do so--by what I hoped by then was his gracious term of endearment. He also took time to compliment me for my occasional use of his beloved shack bricks.
Requiescat In Pace', Dick.
Johnnie
With warmest regards,
John Albers AIA
